Early-stage researchers (ESR)

The network's training aims must be predominantly directed at early-stage researchers, including inter alia training within Ph.D. programmes.

Definition:               Early-stage researchers are defined as those who are, at the time of selection by the host organisation, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate is envisaged.

It should be noted that an individual researcher may not be recruited first as an early-stage researcher and subsequently as an experienced researcher in the same network.

Experienced Researchers (ER)

While maintaining the training of Early-stage Researchers as the primary objective, some networks might justify the involvement of experienced researchers for the purpose of completing their initial training.

Definition:              Experienced researchers must, at the time of the relevant deadline for submission of proposals or selection by the host organisation, depending on the action, either be in possession of a doctoral degree, irrespective of the time taken to acquire it, or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience.

It should be noted that an individual researcher may not be recruited first as an early-stage researcher and subsequently as an experienced researcher in the same network.

ITN Initial Training Network offers early-stage researchers the opportunity to improve their research skills, join established research teams and enhance their career prospects.

Workpackage (WP) refers to an individual research project undertaken within the eldel network.
